Several sessions about using deliberative forums with students in higher education will be be part of the programming for the 2019 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting, June 5-8, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

AASCU's American Democracy Project (ADP) and NASPA are committed to advancing the civic engagement movement in higher education. Join us in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for our annual conference which brings together faculty, students affairs professionals, senior campus administrators, students and community partners. Pre-Conference Program

Dialogue and Deliberation for Campus Engagement

Wednesday, June 5th, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This pre-conference focuses on providing tools for campuses to facilitate and moderate dialogue and democratic deliberation on divisive and salient issues. The participants will learn how to moderate, practice their moderation skills, and develop capacity to train others in moderation. This workshop includes high participation from attendees in practicing these civic skills through the newly released NIFI issue guide, "A House Divided: What would have to give up to get the political system we want?" In conclusion of this workshop, participants will be prepared and confident to engage in democratic dialogue and deliberation on their campuses and in their respective organizations.

Conversations that matter: Building change through deliberative dialogue on Economic Policy
Friday, June 7 from 9:15 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

 

Led by Net Impact and the National Issues Forum Institute, this workshop will feature a how-to presentation on how students can host a deliberative dialogue on their campus. To demonstrate the activity, students will be engaged in a deliberative dialogue on the nation’s fiscal and economic outlook as it pertains to the country’s national debt. Students will discuss existing policy proposals to tax reform and health care reform and learn how to host a deliberative dialogue on their own.
