A David Mathews Center (Alabama) Project - Statewide Workshops to Help Teachers Use Deliberation in Classrooms
Blog Category:
The David Mathews Center for Civic Life in Montevallo, Alabama, has announced an upcoming series of eleven teacher workshops that will be held around the state. The workshops will help teachers incorporate the outcomes of 52 What's Next, Alabama public deliberative forums that were held during 2017, and will provide resources and methods to help students have deliberative discussions in the classroom.
The workshops will be held in every in-service region in Alabama. Click here to see a list of dates and locations. The series is being convened by the David Mathews Center for Civic Life and sponsored by the Alabama Bicentennial Commission.
The following is excerpted from the David Mathews Center for Civic Life website page about the workshop series:
This workshop, supported by a grant from Alabama’s Bicentennial Commission, will equip educators to incorporate place-based learning and deliberation into their curriculum to enhance students' content knowledge and comprehension of Alabama’s unique history. Participating educators will receive tools and resources to facilitate engaging classroom deliberations that highlight Alabama's diverse people and cultures, and engage students in sharing how their own experiences influence their connection with our state’s past, present, and future.
The workshops will utilize the David Mathew’s Centers free place-based issue guides which cover content such as Alabama’s economy, Alabama’s Civil Rights Movement, and the Creek War of 1812.
