Position Announcement for Executive Director at the David Mathews Center for Civic Life. The David Mathews Center for Civic Life (DMC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, nonpartisan organization located in Montevallo, Alabama, on the campus of American Village. DMC assists communities, groups, and citizens across the state to make more effective and productive decisions through the use of dialogue and deliberation. Specifically, DMC connects Alabama’s citizens with community leaders, teachers, organizations, and institutions to discuss issues and make decisions together that affect their local communities. Through the use of public forums, publications, citizen decision-making tools, and other experiential, capacity-building programs and resources, DMC fosters civic engagement, collective learning, collaborative community practices, and stronger communities.

Position Responsibilities:

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall growth and management of the organization, providing direction and leadership for the achievement of its philosophy, mission, strategy, goals and objectives. The Executive Director serves as the chief spokesperson for the organization and is responsible for: Board administration and support; financial management, including the development of annual and long-range budgets; management of the organization’s taxes and insurance; supervision and human resource management for three employees (current); community and public relations; fundraising efforts and campaign initiatives, statewide expansion efforts, and volunteer management.

The Executive Director reports to a Board of Directors and works closely with the DMC officers and the Executive Director and staff of American Village.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Three years’ experience in providing leadership for a non-profit organization and working with a Board of Directors and/or an Advisory Board.

  • A passion for the purpose and mission of the Center.

  • Ability to develop, articulate, and implement the vision and goals of a non-profit organization.

  • A goal-oriented individual who exhibits a high level of personal responsibility and initiative.

  • A team player with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

  • The ability to develop productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.

  • Knowledge and experience in program development and management, event planning, and network-building.

  • Exceptional organizational skills of setting priorities, delegating work, following through to see that work is done effectively, and human resource and personnel management and development.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience (proposed range is $55,000 - $75,000), with a competitive benefits package.
