About the National Issues Forums Institute

The National Issues Forums Institute (NIFI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to helping people talk, decide, and act together for the public good. For over four decades, NIFI has worked to equip, empower, and mobilize people to use deliberation to strengthen democracy and civic life in communities across the country.

About the Role

We’re seeking a Communications & Creative Coordinator who can help us tell the story of deliberative democracy in action. This person will bring creativity, clarity, and heart to everything they do—from writing blog posts and newsletters to designing social media campaigns and digital assets that reflect NIFI’s mission and brand.

This is a hands-on, maker’s role—ideal for someone who thrives on both creative design and thoughtful storytelling, and who’s excited to build a cohesive, engaging communications presence for a national civic nonprofit.

This is a full-time, exempt remote role with occasional travel for program support. Some evening or weekend hours may be needed during intensive program periods. NIFI prioritizes employee well-being and provides reasonable accommodations to support flexible, safe working conditions.

What You’ll Do

Create and Share Stories

  • Draft, edit, and publish blogs, newsletters, press releases, and social media content that highlight the power of public deliberation.
  • Capture and tell stories from NIFI partners, community programs, and national initiatives.
  • Ensure that all communications reflect NIFI’s nonpartisan voice and civic mission.

 Design and Produce

  • Design graphics, reports, event collateral, and social media visuals using NIFI’s brand kit (Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Support creative development for signature initiatives such as America’s Next 250 and the Talk. Decide. Act. workshop series.
  • Maintain consistent, high-quality application of NIFI’s visual identity across all materials.

 Engage and Grow Audiences

  • Manage and update NIFI’s website (WordPress), ensuring content is current, accessible, and visually engaging.
  • Develop and manage email campaigns using platforms like Mailchimp or Constant Contact.
  • Monitor and analyze engagement across digital platforms to guide communications strategy.

Collaborate and Support

  • Work closely with the Executive Director on communications planning and storytelling priorities.
  • Provide creative and technical support for online and in-person events.
  • Support NIFI’s board, staff, and partners in highlighting key impact stories and resources.

Who You Are

  • A creative communicator with 2–4 years of experience in communications, design, marketing, or a related field (nonprofit experience a plus).
  • Skilled in graphic design (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and digital storytelling across web and social platforms.
  • Experienced with WordPress or other CMS tools and email marketing platforms.
  • A strong writer and editor with an eye for narrative flow and tone.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects in a remote, collaborative environment
  • Curious about and/or committed to civic engagement and democratic renewal.
  • Ready to grow with an organization that values experimentation, creativity, and connection.
  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, graphic design, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field is preferred. However, we also value equivalent professional experience that demonstrates strong communication, storytelling, and creative production skills—particularly in nonprofit, civic, or educational settings.

Our Values

At NIFI, we value integrity, dedication to our mission, and a commitment to teamwork and creative problem solving. Even if your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply. We’re building a diverse team whose varied perspectives strengthen civic life and democracy.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Work Environment: Fully remote, collaborative, mission-driven
  • Salary: $50,000–$60,000 (commensurate with experience)
  • Benefits:
    • 100% employer-sponsored health insurance, including dental

    • Company match on a retirement plan
    • 12 days of sick time, 12 days of PTO, plus the entire week between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day
    • Laptop provided
    • Professional development budget to support continued learning and growth
