This 2023 issue discussion guide was produced by the Southern Deliberative Democracy Network in partnership with the National Issues Forums Institute.

The guide presents three perspectives for consideration:

#1 American Patriotism and Values: What will it take to value the roots of the republic’s democracy? how should our nation’s core values of freedom and equal opportunity for all be protected?

#2 Exemplary Leadership: What presidential leadership qualities are needed for the United States in the 21st century? What leadership role should the United States play in the world?

#3 Accountability Under the Law: How do candidates articulate their understanding of the Constitution’s First Amendment freedoms? Is the separation of powers as the Founders organized them functioning adequately?
